Even though a Tiger reserve is mainly famous for Tiger and other large mammals but regular tourists come to the reserve who are keen to move around in the park to catch the glimpses of its’s rich Avifauna. Satpura tiger reserve is home to around 325 bird species, It is worth mentioning about our winged friends or avifauna of Satpura, who would make your visit to Satpura even more exciting and worthwhile. You might see an Indian roller (blue jay) flying right past your eyes and then in another moment you might see a Woolly-necked stork or if you are lucky, you may even see a Crested serpent eagle. Kingfishers have their eyes set on the lake/pond so that they don’t miss out on their prey. Commonly seen birds at Satpura are:

• Peafowl

• Racket- tailed drongo, 

• Golden-hooded oriole, 

• Indian treepie, 

• Rufous treepie, 

• Indian Roller

• Wolly Necked Stork

• Kingfishers

• Crested Serpent Eagle

• Brown Fish Owl


The area is an ideal habited for verities for avian fauna nurtured and cradled in the Satpura Range spread over central part of Madhya Pradesh. These forest are still in virgin state, away from human access in its raw natural form. Along with adjoining Pachmarhi & Bori Sanctuaries, Satpura National Park it covers 1427 km2, otherwise it covers an area of 524 km2. Unspoiled Highland eco-system of Satpura National Park offers shelter to large varieties of Birds which are rarely seen in any other forest area of India.
